Garrett County Historical Society Museum showcases the history of the area. While visiting the museum you will find: Early mining tools, Civil War items, Period furniture displays, Artifacts and photographs, Items from the resort hotels that dotted the area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Early firearms, Native American artifacts collected in the area, Period clothing and military uniforms,Antique toys and dolls. The town of Accident dates
back to 1800 and is located on Route 219 about 5 miles North of Deep
Creek Lake. The Drane House is the oldest known
structure. Kaese's Mill was constructed in 1868 and is located by the
Bear Creek-Fish Hatchery Road. Casselman River Bridge was built in 1813. It was the largest single-span stone arch bridge (80 feet) in the 19th Century connecting the nation's first Federal Highway. Picnic area with fireplaces are available. The bridge is located on Route 40 east of Grantsville. Friend Family Associations National Heritage Museum & Library contains 700 general genealogical books and files of local families. The museum depicts a history of early life in the United States, the history of Western Maryland, and life of the early settlers in this country. Pennington Cottage at Deer Park was built in 1892. It is a large three story summer cottage with fourteen rooms. The Pennington Cottage is presently the Deer Park Inn, a restaurant and bed & breakfast. The Deer Park Inn is located on Route 135 Old Oakland and Deer Park Road in Mountain Lake Park. Cranesville is a sub-artic swamp. This swamp is a natural phenomenon of Mother Nature. The natural growth including rare flora found in the swamp is indigenous to the arctic regions. Cranesville is at Muddy Creek Road in Oakland. 301 334-1948. Western Maryland Oral History & Coal Mining Museum McHenry. Thirty-seven oral history tapes and transcriptions are housed in the library. Periodic displays feature local artifacts such as mining tools, hats, lights, bird cages, photographs, documents, old mining magazines and feed sack cloth.
